The Manto Sipi Cree Nation formerly, God's River First Nation, is located along the north shore of God's Lake at the outlet to God's River. It is approximately 585 air kilometers northeast of Winnipeg and 255 air kilometers southeast of Thompson. The Manto Sipi Cree Nation was originally part of the God's Lake Narrows First Nation. It was in the mid-1940's that the people moved from God's Lake Narrows to the north shore of God's Lake at the mouth of God's River to form the community of Manto Sipi. Sources have indicated that the separation of the two communities was related to religious differences while others contend it was for economic reasons. Whatever the reason, the physical separation of the two bands led to the creation of a new Band in 1976. The Manto Sipi Cree Nation was formed by Ministerial Order on May 7th, 1976. It was not until June of 1988 that Manto Sipi Cree Nation got recognition as a reserve in Canada.
The Manto Sipi Cree Nation after lengthy consultations with representatives of the federal government and its First Nation citizens took over control of their education system in April of 1994 and the Amos Memorial Education Authority became incorporated as a non-profit entity. There are five Board of Directors who are elected for a two-year term. The elections for the School Board occur in October every second year.
In April 2022, the school moved to a new location with the new building equipped with state of the art equipment. This time, they rename the old school from Amos Okemow Memorial School (1987) into Manto Sipi Cree Nation School (2022). From 1959 to 1986, the school operates with the name God's River School. To date, there are approximately 390 students, 22 teachers, 25 Educational Assistants, and 30 Support Staff.
